Abstract

|
Incidental detection of focal hyperechogenicities is frequent during hepatic sonography and possible causes for these may be intrahepatic duct stone, intraparenchymal calcification, penumobilia, cysts, or periportal fibrosis. Computed tomography
was
performed in 26 patients who had intrahepatic focal hyperechogenicities on sonography. The results showed 24 cases (75%) of intrahepatic calcifications, two cases of focal fatty change, one case of hemangioma and cyst, and no definite abonrmal CT
findings in four cases. Most (21 cases out of 24) of the intrahepatic calcification were shown as high echogenic foci with posterior shadowings on US and as distinct hyperdense clacific spots without bile duct dilatation on CT within right lobe
of
the
liver. Therefore, it can be safely said that focal hyperechogenicities of the right hepatic lobe without biliary dilatation in routine abdominal ultrasonography represent intrahepatic calcific foci in most of cases especially when there is a
definite
posterior acoustic shadowing.
